Advent begins

The countdown begins. A time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas. Please join us for our Carol Concert at St Thomas’s Church on Monday 16th December at 6:00 pm.

Early finish – Friday 20th December

As the excitement builds towards the end of the term and the end of term assembly we have decided to finish slightly earlier at 2.00 pm on the last day. I am sure we will all be exhausted after our collective festive shenanigans in our legendary end of term assembly. We hope to get both buses on a slightly earlier pick-up, we will let you know. It will also be a non-uniform day – bring your best Christmas jumper - raising money for the charity ALABARÉ. These terms were chosen as a charity. Many thanks to the School Council for your support.

Sports round-up! Year 7/8 Girls Pitch Up and Play Rugby a success

A big well done to all the Year 7 and 8 girls who took part in the Salisbury Rugby Club Pitch Up and Play event on the 19th November. The event was structured as a ‘round-robin’ resulting in playing a number of different schools. Everyone put lots of effort into playing which was great to see, especially as it was some of the girls first ever time of playing rugby! Lots of tries were scored during the matches alongside some

excellent defending. It was a true privilege to take the girls to represent Sarum Academy. Well done girls and a big thanks to Salisbury rugby club for hosting us - and providing the girls with after match food!

Year 11 March on to Quarter Finals

The Year 11 boys have had a busy few weeks with a game nearly every week, the boys have been working hard in training working on key themes such as team shape with and without the ball and possession while moving through the thirds. After reaching the third round in two National Cup competitions they followed this up with a convincing display vs Hardenhuish from Chippenham with a 4-1 easy win.

Not only did the boys play attractive, expansive football but showed great unity and togetherness to overcome a good side. This places the Year 11 boys into the Quarter Finals of the Wiltshire School Cup and the Semi-Finals of the Salisbury District Cup where we will be hoping to advance further.

Year 7 Football

Having only come together as a group for three months, our Year 7 male football team are showing signs of excellent development. On Thursday 21st November we took on Wyvern school whose track record is enough to frighten off any side. Having started the game with great positivity we threatened the Wyvern goal with several early chances, we were able to more than match the unbeaten side with our possession, a great chance fell as Harvey Waters threaded through Riley Sutton for a great chance before rattling the ball just wide of the Wyvern goal.

We came in at the break on the up, and full of confidence, having shown Wyvern we were here for a battle, nullifying their forwards physical presence. Just after the break, we found ourselves under pressure conceding early on from a near-post corner, devastation, but we are Sarum and we continued to show our determination. As the light begun to fade it became ever clearer that the game was in the balance and with chances either end we found ourselves on the wrong end of the fading light right at the death as Wyvern made it 2-0. The team showed excellent spirit as well as organisation to really put to the test a Wyvern team who had trampled on all other opposition teams. A massive well done to all, despite the result not going our way we take plenty of confidence for our remaining Wiltshire schools games.

Eat for exams success – I like it…

Breakfast a recipe for good grades

breakfast.png

Research by the University of Leeds found that students who rarely ate breakfast on school days are more likely to get poorer GCSE results than those who ate breakfast frequently. The study of GCSE results for 294 students from schools and colleges in the west of Yorkshire revealed that teenagers who said they rarely ate breakfast achieved nearly two grades lower than those who seldom missed it.

Badminton

Four Year 11 students recently entered the Salisbury School Badminton competition and narrowly missed out on a bronze medal after competing with some high standard players. Playing a mixture of both single and double matches each student battled against 10 other schools. Nathan Luft, in particular, stood out, winning at least one match against every school he played. In the end Sarum had to settle for 4th place but we would like to congratulate all four boys for their efforts and attitudes (which were commented on). Well done to the following: Savion Elmamplassery, Bradlee Francis, Dylan Harrison & Nathan Luft

Year 7 Netball

Our first tournament of the year was for our newly formed Year 7 Girls Netball team. The afternoon consisted of lots of Netball Skill workshops which the girls threw themselves into, ready to use the skills in the game. We challenged Godolphin, Trafalgar and South Wilts, where the girls maintained excellent teamwork to put up a good fight all afternoon and showed copious amounts of enthusiasm! Well done Year 7! Player of all three matches was Simona Moulis. Congratulations on your fantastic defending!

Term 1 & 2 Netball - Year 11 Netball

The Year 11 girls kicked off the first term with a friendly against Lee Hurst Swan, the girls showed great determination and represented the school fantastically, the team were a credit to the PE Department.

The Year 11 girls played their second match against St Josephs with only a point between us until the very end! Parents and supporters watched on as the team tried their best to take the lead. An unfortunate defeat! Well done to our player of the match: Mary Wise.

Year 8 Netball

The Year 8 girls took a close defeat against St Josephs. The girls worked extremely hard in cold weather conditions to fall slightly behind in the last quarter. The team were great ambassadors for the school with immaculate sportsmanship. Well done to Lilly Stanton, a new student to the school, who received player of the match for Sarum

Sarum continue Boccia success

boccia.png

13 Academy students entered the Salisbury Schools Boccia event last week. The sport has been a huge success for the Academy in recent years and has been used as a source of competition, team work and collective responsibility among our students. Our five teams were split into year groups: Year 7, Year 8, Year 7/9 Mixed and two Year 11 groups made up the representation from the Academy.

The competition was strong in the shape of St Joseph’s, St Edmunds and Wyvern and, although fierce, the sporting spirit was clear for all to see; win, lose or draw it was sporting handshakes before and after each match. After 8 rounds of fixtures, in a round-robin format, both Year 11 sides and the Year 8 team have qualified for the Wiltshire competition on the 6th December after finishing 2nd (Year 11), 3rd (Year 8) and 4th (Year 11). Our Year 7s finished respectfully in 6th and 12th place.

The Academy is looking forward to further success in the Boccia arena in the future! We wish the best of luck to our three teams that qualified for the next stage. Well done to the following students for progressing to the next round:

Year 11

  • Connor Sanderson

  • Ryan Devine

  • Lewis Woolford

  • Cameron McCafferty

Year 8

  • Zac Barton

  • Fletcher Johnson

  • Jacamo De Bens

Wiltshire Run to come for Dylan

Sarum would like to congratulate Dylan Antunovic Fry (Year 11) on qualifying for the Salisbury Cross Country team after Christmas. Dylan has run a number of different races in Term 1 and improved his position each time. He finished 6th overall in the Salisbury School standings and we now look forward to him having further success with the County team.

Well done Dylan!
